We hope that you find the FAQ pages informative. We are hoping that due to limited time in answering all questions in emails that these pages will cut back on the # of questions that are answered through emails. The answers are based upon our experiences and are not a result of published information or as a result of a survey. Thanks Maria Hall
Shipping out birds has many stages that can affect future shipments............
1) Birds are available according to availability and who paid first
2) There might be a delay in shipment if we are in the process of growing your birds to the age selected. (birds only grown to 6-12 weeks category).
3) We are sometimes awaiting for space to get your birds up in preparation for shipment- possible 1 week delay getting birds up.
4) Once chickens are caught up the birds are observed for about one week. We put them on antibiotics for one week before shipment.
5) Once ready for shipment, how is the weather? It needs to be 35 to 85 degrees to ship out safely.
6) Another factor is whether or not we have poultry boxes in stock & are waiting on a shipment of poultry boxes to arrive.
7) We do not sex birds so when filling an order there might be a delay in shipment when combining two hatch groups.
8) Maria's Jersey Giants does not have employees so therefore we juggle shipments around our family.
9) If a person questions my integrity we reserve the right to not ship birds to you and/or cancel the shipment and will refund 100% of money with no birds shipped period.
YES, in order to receive credit the box needs to be opened at the post office enough to see that the birds are standing and are well. If there are any losses on PAID birds, please have the postmaster on a piece of papers state the number of deceased chicks and have the P.O. post mark stamp . It is important to do so before refunds and/or replacements occur.
I ship eggs starting January to November untill supply starts and lasts. All egg orders are filled in the ordered received and are shipped out in between hatches and/or when incubator is at capacity. The eggs are packed very carefully with extra padding. Typically waiting period on eggs shipped is 5 days to 2 weeks. We will notify you before shipment occurs making sure you are ready for them.
Because the Jersey giants are a large fowl the size keeps them from flying over the top of a 5' pen. Unless the birds are younger and lighter weight at that time they can only fly 3-4'. A cover on the pen will help protect the birds from owls and/or hawks.
A cock is a rooster that is over 1 yr of age and a cockerel is under 1 yr of age. If you are showing it is important for the cockeral not to be in a cock class due to the fact that a young rooster will find it hard to compete in a cock class up against more mature birds.
A pullet is under 1 yr of age and a hen is over 1 yr of age. It is important that if you are showing birds that the pullet be in a pullet class and not in a laying hen class. The bird will be more competetive in its own age category.
We have been told that are birds mature out to be heavier birds than hatchery birds and our chicks are definitely more healthy than hatchery birds. We feel that this comes with years of good genetics going back since 1977. Because we raise only Jersey Giant we can focus on the qualities of the breed. In 2016 I was approached by a 4-H parent expressing her concerns about her purchased hatchery Jersey Giant hen. She didn't know if her Giant was truly a Giant because it wasn't as big as our daughters. I asked her the age of her hen and she said, "It is two years old! " It was then I realized first hand what peope were talking about the difference of my Jersey Giants verses Hatchery birds. Her two year old hen was NOT the size of our SIX month olds!
YES, it is a privelege to be recognized in the following magazines: Hobby Farms, Backyard Poultry Magazine, and a newer magazine out there called "Chickens". We were most recently pictured in the 2017 March/April issue of CHICKENS MAGAZINE!
We come very highly recommended by many folks that have seen our birds and/or have heard about us by word of mouth or through magazine articles. It has taken several years to establish Maria's Jersey Giants.
-We breed for the betterment of the breed and do not mass produce.
- Long history of breeding Jersey Giants since 1977
-We raise the blacks, blues, and splashes. Hatcheries do not raise blues and splashes.
- We spend close to $550.00 per month in chicken feed alone so therefore we have to ask a decent price for our birds. This does not include housing, electricity, advertising, supplies, supplements, & bedding.
- We raise our own Jersey giants and use our own supply of hatching eggs to produce offspring for sale. Hatcheries do not produce consistent quality when purchasing eggs from many farms. We do not mass produce.
We notice that chicks will spend a lot of time under the hen and eat less unless you provide a light bulb for the birds. Chicks that are raised under a heat lamp will eat more and will be larger birds than the chicks that are raised by a broody hen.
Once I sell birds and/or eggs to anyone, I can not be held responsible for the future breeding set forth by breeders. I know from experience in my earlier years in the search for Golda Miller stock that people used her name freely and it their birds were a POOR representation of what she raised. While we use the Standard of Perfection (SOP) as an aide in selection of future breeding stock, each of us have a set of STANDARDS. We also know that standards vary from individual breeding programs and some have HIGHER standards then OTHERS. Some breeders will post photos to an auction and/or forum and then attach my name (Maria Hall or Maria's Jersey Giants) and it happens to be a terrible photo due to composition and/or color. I can not be responsible for poorly represented birds.
Over the years I have had people steal my actual photos to sell their birds on auctions only for their own financial gain.
It can take 22 to 23 days to hatch Jersey Giant eggs. It is important to candle eggs at day 10 and also at day 18 to discard any under developed or unfertile eggs. Place eggs in the hatcher tray. Leave shut until the hatch is completed as every time you open the incubator moist air escapes causing baby chicks to stick in the shell.

NO PHOTOS AND/OR ANY PART OF THIS WEBSITE ARE TO BE USED AND/OR QUOTED NOR IS THE NAME MARIA HALL AND/OR MARIA'S JERSEY GIANTS ARE TO BE MENTIONED WHILE IN THE SELLING OF BIRDS AND/OR HATCHING EGGS THROUGH FORUMS, ADS, AND/OR AUCTIONS.
My reputation is most important and Maria's Jersey Giants has NO control of the future breeding programs set forth by past customers nor do we have anything to do with the type of business that is conducted whether it be ethical or unethical. UNLESS WE KNOW YOU VERY WELL AND THERE IS TRUST ESTABLISHED WITH YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM WE WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT SWAP BIRDS AND/OR EGGS. THERE IS TOO MUCH JUNK BEING PRODUCED OUT THERE AND WE DO NOT WANT ANY PART OF IT. TOO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE SAY THEY HAVE SO AND SO'S BIRDS AND LET ME JUST SAY IT IS NOT THE SAME UNLESS YOU PURCHASE DIRECTLY FROM THE SOURCE ITSELF !!!!! WHILE A BREEDER USES THE APA STANDARDS AS AN AIDE IN SELECTION OF FUTURE BREEDERS .........EACH OF US AS BREEDERS ESTABLISH OUR OWN STANDARDS........AS WE KNOW SOME BREEDERS HAVE HIGHER STANDARDS THAN OTHERS. This is what establishes the quality produced by good breeders and the qualities of those that have lower standards producing QUANTITY OVER QUALITY and by producing numerous types of breeds. We breed only QUALITY splash, blacks, and nicely laced blue Jersey Giants with exceptionally nice lacing! Please note that our baby chicks come from quality BREEDER AND APA Quality birds, however with this being said we can not guarantee "Show" birds. Expect to have possible pet, breeder, and our APA show bird types just as the case if you are raising any other species. Some birds will turn out nicer than others.
NO OTHER BREEDS RAISED HERE.
Honesty is always the best policy! If you show respect you will get respect!
